Maternity Leave & Parental Leave

Even during life’s special moments, your pension fund ensures that your contributions remain secure - so you can focus on what matters most.

Exemption from contributions during maternity leave and parental leave

During maternity leave and parental leave, membership of the pension scheme is exempt from contributions whilst insurance cover remains in force, provided that no medical or veterinary practice is carried out during this period. For members in private practice, exemption from contributions during parental leave can only be granted under certain conditions. SÄV service team is happy to answer any queries you may have.

Your employer will notify the pension scheme of the leave. If your employment ends during maternity leave or parental leave, please notify us accordingly and provide proof of your current status. Parental leave may be split in consultation with your employer.

The period of maternity leave is exempt from contributions. Parental leave is exempt from contributions as long as no income is earned from self-employment. To qualify, you must submit proof from the Kassenärztlichen Vereinigung Sachsen (KVS) or from your tax adviser. Exemption from contributions for parental leave is available until the child reaches the age of three at the latest.

Maternity leave is exempt from contributions, subject to proof. Parental leave is exempt from contributions, subject to proof, and for a maximum period until the child reaches the age of three.

Important: Periods during which no contributions were paid do not affect the amount of your future old-age pension. You can make voluntary additional payments to increase your pension entitlement, and you can also claim credit for periods spent raising children with the German Federal Pension Insurance (DRV).

Having periods spent raising children recognised by the DRV

Even compulsory members of a professional pension scheme such as the SÄV can apply to the German Pension Insurance (DRV) for the recognition of periods spent raising children and thereby also accrue pension entitlements there. Further information on this is available from the DRV.

Note: Certified copies of the birth certificates of the children born and raised should be enclosed with the application for the registration of child-rearing periods.
